CULTURE AND TRADITIONS

 

Nowaday theGuadeloupaen society is a mixture of different culture : European, African, Indian …

This is not a question of cultural origins but of the different aspects of life in Guadeloupe which make it so original and exceptional.

 

1)gastronomy and religion

As strange as it may seen, both words cannot be dissociated here. Each religious event have a special dishcomming with it.

all Saints'day

people death is important in this society that why there is a special time to think about them with prayers and candles.

Christmas time

Instaured by Europeans in the island, it is now a part a traditions. Time of pork cooking: christmas black pudding creoleChristmas ham, pigeon peas…its also time to spend timewith the family and sing the Jesus Christ's birth

Carnival

Most important period which permits amusement; from January 1st different groups paradet in the streets every Sunday at the rythm of the drums sound. The most spectacular have been reserved for the last 4 days : "dimanche gras"(pyjamas parade earli in the morning;shrove monday (parade by night);shrove tuesday ( the big parade); ash wednesday (jump up, last day of carnival, everybody dressed in black and white get into the parade to celebrate the end of vaval , the king of the carnival).

Carême

Feast period: after party time… diet time. Period of payers and sacrifice during 40 days for the Catholics. The specialty is frittlers of Pumpkins and Turnips

Easter

Then for Jesus Christ resurrection, the whole family gets together on the beach for a long week end (camping) and prepare crabs with spinach sauce and rice.

the first communion

first communion of a child goeshad in hand of traditionof the meal after mass and the cake and "chaudeau" cream.

Wake

the wake is also a specific heritage: friends ,relationsand neigbours attend that moment singing to the rythm of "Gwo-ka"without drums and telling tales

The one first inhabitants of the island, the arawaks , then the carribs indulged in dancing singing and playing music.

The european influence has also left its mark.

our african ancestors adapt theirmusic and dances to the environement.

The indian came over with indian tradition: religious and pagan cults.

None of this aspects must be neglected.

If the principal:the"gwo-ka" had survive with the "toumblak" the "kaladja" the"kaladja" the "pajambel"or"gwajanbel, the "lewoz" and the"woulé". The dance: waltz,winder,tango...western origin illustrated the evening. the cultural syncrtism give roots to the "biguine" and créole mazourka.

The slaves appropriated dance of the master: the "quadrille au commandement"testified that.

Costume was a part of our inheritance: "robe gaul","robe "di cham",",robe "a kô","robe"ti-do"and "robe acollerette.

A ladie in costume of ceremony weared big panties, a shift,a sub-waist, alace,petti-coat or a broderie anglaise underskirt.A dress in cotton satin or brocarde satin. in his head a "madras"skilfully tiedby wayed of headdress.UNder ears arrounde neck and under the arms: rich jewel("collierchou","chaineforçat","colliergraind'or","sautoir","grenat","corail"...
