Anim ripped from Digital Illusion's MotorHead

So, here, I want to explain a few words which are used in my description pages. Tell me if I should add some more :)

Tracker : A widely used word for extremly various things ... but here, it refers to the programs used to create music. The most well known are Protracker (Amiga), Soundtracker (Amiga), Fastracker (PC) and so on. There are hundreds of trackers on every platform nowadays.

Packer : This word meens HERE a specific program that converts a 'standard' music format (created with Protracker/Noisetracker for instense) to another format. Several reasons to do that. The first, of course is for replayer speed :) (read below for 'replayer' explanation). Another good reason is the size of the music ... Protracker format was certainly not created with this detail in mind :(. I add one last reason ... preventing the ripping of the music :) ('ripping' is explained below too). Heh, Module Protector WAS created for that, as LSD states in Grapevine #3 :).

Ripping/Rip/Ripper : Ripping means 'extracting' something from a program (game/demo/whatever). Some people better use the word 'stealing' ... for understandable copyright reasons. What we 'rip' here is music. From games, demos (intro,musicdisk,etc.). Still, the copyright remains on what is ripped ... heh ... in fact, you can do EVERYTHING with any program you have (even the retail ones) save 'changing' something inside. Meaning, you're not allowed to change graphix, or crack a game if it means modifying its code, etc. . Now, 'ripping' musics has never been punished by any law ... as long as nothing is changed inside the file. Though, adding the author's name and from where the file comes is rather harmless i'd say. Better, it gives credit to composers !.
Note: The descriptions of packed formats on my pages ARE for ripping and converting purposes !. If it wasn't clear at first sight, now it is :).

Replayer : I dont use this word in the description pages, but it's more or less linked to, since 'replayer' speed are the reasons of more or less 95% of the packers.
So, a replayer is a program that 'replays' :) ... well, it plays the music. What's important is that it has to be fast because we want to do something else while playing the music (moving a sprite for exemple). The original replayers (which came along with Protracker/Noisetracker) were extremly slow taking a whole lot of CPU time leaving not much of it for anything else. Though, some old groups managed outstanding productions with the original replayer ... .

Sample : That's one sound. A music is (generaly) composed of several sounds (Drums,Strings, etc.) and are called 'Sample' in trackers.

Abreviations : Yes, it happens rather frequently ...
  • 'PTK' stands for 'Protracker'
  • 'STK' stands for 'SoundTracker'
  • 'NTK' stands for 'Noisetracker'
  • 'Fx' stands for 'effect'. The note effect command ... grab a tracker if you're missing the point for it's not a tracker's doc here.
  • 'SMP' stands for 'Sample' (explained upward)
