Mondiaux-2001 - Marathon messieurs: victoire de l'Ethiopien Abera

L'Ethiopien Gezahegne Abera, 23 ans, est devenu champion du monde de marathon, vendredi à Edmonton.
Abera, lauréat des Jeux de Sydney, est le premier homme à réaliser le doublé titres olympique et mondial. Il succède au palmarès à l'Espagnol Abel Anton, vainqueurs des deux précédentes éditions.
Il a devancé au sprint le Kenyan Simon Biwott, s'imposant en 2 h 12 min 42 sec, avec une seconde d'avance sur Biwott. L'Italien Stefano Baldini a pris la troisième place (2:13.18).
C'est le premier titre mondial du marathon remporté par l'Ethiopie qui ne comptait jusqu'alors que la médaille d'argent de Kebede Balcha en 1983. L'Ethiopie a également remporté la Coupe du monde de marathon basée sur les trois meilleurs coureurs.
Biwott a apporté la deuxième médaille pour le Kenya qui avait gagné l'or grâce à Douglas Waikiihuri en 1987.
Ce marathon a été disputé par un temps doux pendant la cérémonie d'ouverture des 8e mondiaux.
Le Néo-Américain Khalid Khannouchi, meilleur performeur mondial de la spécialité (2h05:42.), a dû renoncer après environ 1 h 25 min de course.
Abdelhakim Bagy a terminé premier Français à la 16e place en 2 h 20 min 43 sec.
