I made it in the Gimp, all black and
white, the whiter = the more transparent, unless you use 'Neg', as I did
here [see below the setting in the material window].

Use these settings in the texture
window [F6]...

Of note here is the use of 'Neg',
in the second column to the right ; also the necessity to use the 'DVar'
slider, at the bottom of the same column, for the texture to start blending
with the color. In consequence, once 'DVar is less than '1.000', the alpha
effect can be modulated through the use of the Var slider, at the bottom
of the leftmost column to the right.
