Unfortunately Diana didn't move up in the
rankings after her free program:
1. Josée Chouinard

2. Jennifer Robinson

3. Angela Nikodinov (USA)
4. Karen Preston (CAN)
5. Surya Bonaly (FRA)

7. Diana Poth (HUN)
1999
Canadian Open - short program
Bad
performance for Diana- she fell on her triple toe loop
(which was to be her combination) and on her solo jump. She
landed the double axel cleanly. Her marks were from 4.4 to
4.8 for technical and from 5.0 to 5.3 for presentation, and
she placed 7th:
1.
Angela Nikodinov (USA)
2. Jennifer Robinson (CAN)
3. Josee Chouinard (CAN)
4. Surya Bonaly (FRA)
5. Elizabeth Manley (CAN)
6. Karen Preston (CAN)

1999 Cup of
Russia - Free program
Here
is Andrei's review of the event (thanks Andrei!):
Unfortunately I haven't seen the short
program. Diana was 6th after the short program and obviously
she lost it to Lucinda Ruh, who was 5th,only because of the
second mark.
But in the free program there was a big difference between
the two of them. Diana didn't fall and didn't have any
singles and Lucinda fell 3 times and had only one or two
triple jumps. So Diana came 5th, 4th was Angela Nikodinov
from the USA, I'd say that maybe she deserved 3rd place.
Elena Sokolova finished 3rd and only one judge vote decided
it. Yulia Soldatova came in 2nd, she fell on the triple toe
loop / triple toe combination, then singled the lutz but
then she did everything else. Irina Slutskaya was the
winner, she was nearly excellent. Irina did only one mistake
- she singled the flip (or toe loop, I didn't see it
well).
Now some of my thoughts about Diana's skating :-) The music
she skated to and her costume were the same as you described
in the Trophee Lalique review. I think that it's a great
costume, I mean it fits her style, but in my opinion the
dress for the latin music performance should be a little bit
different, maybe the same style but with more bright colors,
something like that. But she looked great anyway :-) During
the warm up she did all the jumps too :-) , most of the time
she was practicing the axel. Then her performance came. She
started with a nice triple toe loop, then she did triple
lutz. She doubled the loop and then she did triple toe loop.
Then she doubled the flip, did the double salchow and did
the double axel / double toe combination. Her spins and
steps were fine but I think there could be more spins in
this program. Spectators liked her performance (as I did too
:-) , I'd say she's got more applauds than any other
non-russian skater. And her marks were:

I
think Diana's technical elements (jumps, etc.) are great,
but she needs to improve artistically. I'm sure she has a
lot of potential and she'll be among the leaders very
soon.
Thanks again to Andrei for this great
review!:-)

Trophee Lalique - Free program
Here
is my review of Diana's program (you can read my review of
the whole event here):
She
didn't skate well at all.:-( She was wearing a dress that I
didn't really like, although it suited her well- she looked
very sexy, maybe too sexy. The costume was beige, and from
the back it looked like a two-piece swin-suit. Her skirt was
not a real skirt, actually it was just black fringes on her
hips. But she was beautiful with it! She skated to spanish
music by the Gipsy Kings and Santa Esmeralda. If some of you
can remember the music Marie-Pierre Leray used for her 94/95
short program, it was exactly the same pieces of music (but
longer obviously!). She started with a triple toe
loop/double toe combination, and I'm quite sure she was
going for triple/triple. She singled the lutz.:-(( Then she
doubled the loop, fell on the toe loop (or flip, I didn't
see it well) and then fell again on the flip. She did the
triple salchow and double axel. She ends with a great step
sequence and a scratch spin. She does a lot of hand and arms
movements. I loved the program, but there it was not a good
performance.

championships - Long program
The
pressure was great, and Diana couldn't quite handle it. She
started well with her triple toe loop/triple toe loop
combination, but made only a double lutz after that. Then
she came back well with the triple loop, but fell on the
triple flip. She tried the jump again and did a single. She
managed to land the triple salchow. Unfortunately, she ended
with a single axel. She shook her head after that, and was
really disappointed. Her marks were low:

1999 World
championships - Short program
Diana skated a great short program! She
landed her triple toe loop/triple toe loop combination, her
triple salchow and double axel. She gave absolutely
everything and her program was full of personnality,
sensuality, and was totally in connection with her music
Black
Velvet. She really seemed to have fun and to enjoy
her music and her program. All her elements were good: the
spins were fast, and she made a great step sequence from end
to end of the rink. Her marks were good, considering she
didn't make the most difficult jumps (lutz or flip).

European championships - Long program
Diana skated really well there: she started
with an impressive triple toe loop/triple toe loop
combination, and a beautiful triple lutz. Then she seemed to
lose her timing, making a double loop and a double flip,
both instead of triples. But she tried the flip again and
landed it succesfully, and then she landed the triple
salchow. She ended with a great double axel. Her spins were
fast and she showed great charisma. She was really happy at
the end of the program. Her marks:

Diana skated one of the best performances of
her life. She landed all her jumps, and was really good at
interpreting her Arabian music throughout the program. She
was 15th going into the long and skated in the second group
of skaters (out of 4), so the judges had to leave room for
better marks for the skaters to come, but her marks made her
really excited!
