Building Egoist
N°1
| Phase 1 : Drawing, cutting and stitching | Only current tools are needed at this stage of building | |
| Drawing and cutting are easily done on a table | ||
| As you shall see from plywood cutting plans, all cuttings are made from precut rectangular forms so that hand saw cutting is restricted to a minimum. Waste may be slightly increased but cutting accuracy is bettered. | ||
| Once cut, pieces were hanged on a support as I thought it would be a quicker way than traditional on ground mounting. Nevertheless it proved problematic for getting things symetrical | ||
| Holes are drilled every 20 cm along the chines for stitching. A small metal plate is used as a guide | ||
| Stitching of bilge plates is then made with electric copper wire | ||
| Egoist hull fully stitched, apart from the front collision bulkead which will be stitched later in two 4mm plys as a 8mm would not bend. | ||
| As you may see, the stem itself (cut in a pinewood
piece) was also stitched to upper plates. Ready for epoxy gluing, if only weather permitting as the epoxy glue I have found has to be ideally used at 23/25 °Celsius with an absolute minimum of 18°C a few hours after gluing. |
