(1834 - 1886)

Italian composer whose fame is based upon one work, La Gioconda, an opera that contains the famous "Dance of the Hours." Ponchielli also wrote band pieces, vocal chamber pieces, and music for voice and piano

Yvonne DESPORTES (1907-1993) : a fait ses études au Conservatoire de Paris avec Noël et Jean Gallon, Maurice Emmanuel et Paul Dukas. Premier Grand Prix de Rome en 1932. A enseigné le solfège au Conservatoire de Paris à partir de 1943, puis le contrepoint et la fugue, dès 1959. Oeuvres : sonates, quatuor, quintette, sextuor, octuor pour quatuor vocal et quatuor à cordes, deux symphonies (1958 et 1964), deux concertos pour percussion (1957 et 1960), des variations symphoniques, un concerto pour trompette, des mélodies, des pièces vocales diverses, des opéras (de 1936 à 1965), des ballets (de 1935 à 1961), et de très nombreux ouvrages didactiques.

Two hundred years ago a new dance fashion took Central Europe by storm. Csárdás! -The Tango of the East.In the midst of innumerable gentle court dances for the nobility came a dance for the people, accompanied by fiery gypsy music. Never was there a dance so majestic and graceful, yet so robust and dynamic.
