Gothic Atmospheric
Metal
......The
Gothic Atmospheric Metal is the most
recent and the most fashionable style of Atmospheric
Metal. Many new bands appear each year, but only the founder band
of the style, Theatre of Tragedy
(and most recently Tristania) has reached a certain reputation.
.....The usual contrasts of Atmospheric
Metal are less original, less varied here but they are very intense,
because we can find them not only on the intrumental level with
the alternation between the slow parts played with orchestral
synths or violins and the heavy parts, but on the vocal level
too. The voices are almost always based on the opposition
between a Death voice (sometimes Black) and a clear female voice.
The gothic spirit, the dark romanticism,
turn this contrast in a fight between darkness, death (Death voice
and metal part) and light, life and love (clear voices, violins)
......Most recently Tristania
has tried to reached a higher magnitude in the contrats with the
use of several Death voices and a classical choir.

Here the female voices are ethereal because the
woman symbolized pureness and weakness. She is losing the fight
against the death. All is despair.
Doom oriented
The first wave of Gothic Atmospheric
Metal (1995). Theatre of Tragedy and its "clones" are
influenced by Doom Metal only.
These bands come from Black Metal
and not from Doom Metal. The big use of synth and female voices
can lead us to classify the bands in Gothic Atmospheric Metal
and not in (Atmospheric) Black Metal.
The second wave of gothic Atmospheric
Metal, initiated in Germany between 96 and 97, and popularized
by Tristania in 98. This bands use Black voices (in addition to
death voices) and try to magnify the music (classical choir, opera
voices, concept-album,...)
