WORKING EXPERIENCE

SANOFI SYNTHELABO Plant of Sisteron. France, May to November 2000 (6 months)

PROCESS ENGINEER in the Process Department of a 500 people plant manufacturing fine chemicals(batch process) for pharmaceutical product.

As a process engineer, my principal activity is to propose solutions when a technical problem occurs in one of the plant units. My job includes also improving units productivity and security by revamping some old units. Whatever the project is ( short modification or revamping of a big unit), my job can be described into different steps: Analysing the problem, proposing technical solutions and redacting the so-called 'process book' which includes modifications to be done and the new equipment specifications. At least, I have to follow the realisation by the technical services and to make sure that modifications are done as specified.

POLYMER PROCESSING LABORATORY. University of Maryland, College Park, MD. USA, October 1998 to February 2000 (16 months)

Research (National Duty). I was in charge of two reasearch projects in the polymer mixing area. These projects (sponsorized by Elf Atochem North America) aimed to study the mixing of different viscosity materials in a co-rotating twin screw extruder (COTSE). The two projects had, as industrial application, the mixing of organic peroxide in PP matrix, and the mixing of impact modifiers in a PBT matrix.

My job consisted as well in theoretical studies as in mixing experiments in a laboratory extruder. I had the opportunity to initiate myself to various technological area such as electronic microscopy (TEM, SEM), polymer rheology , extruder screw design, mixing phenomena (capillary number theory, drop/agglomerat break-up models) or flow and image analysis.

The first project at least gave birth to paper presented at the SPE Antec 2000..

SOCIETE EUROPEENNE DE PROPULSION, Bordeaux France 1998 (3 months)

Work placement as an engineer. I was in charge of a project on an industrial installation used for gas cleaning. The purpose of this study was to characterize the hydrodynamic behavior and efficiency of the installation in order to optimize this latter. I had the possibility to undertake various initiatives and make a lot of industrials contacts.

Final project. Resulting from my work placement, the society proposed a final study project concerning 5 engineer students from my school. It aimed to apply the installation I studied to the whole plant including unit operations such as water cleaning or regeneration of cleaning oil. We finally proposed a technical economic study of all possible processes. Personally, this project let me initiate myself to work group management.

AQUASOURCE, Toulouse, France, 1995 (3 months)

Work placement as a technician .I carried out a study on a Glycerol recuperation process in industrial wastes. First I undertook an experimental study of the mixture to be separated. Then I chose the process and made a design of the unit, before carrying out an economic study.

Others: I experienced two short work placements during my studies, first as a worker in the Papèteries de Gascogne (1 month), then as a researcher (1 month) in the solid particle ENSIGC laboratory.
