An important first in France about vivisection.

After months of undercover investigation of an employee at EVIC CEBA, a vivisection company, we give you an inside look at the day-to-day operations of the animal experimentation industry.

The study is over - euthanasia following vivisection

EVIC CEBA is a subcontractor with a major stake in animal
experimentation.

Its purpose is to test all sorts of products before they are
introduced on the market.

Located in the suburbs of Bordeaux (South of France),
EVIC CEBA was established over twenty years ago.
Headquartered in Vincennes, (near Paris).

In Blanquefort (South of France), the company performs
subcontracting work for large French corporations.

The tools of its trade are animals.

Dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and other rodents are
among the animals used to test cosmetics and household
products (including perfume, self-tanning cream, food products,
and detergents)
.

In June 2000, the use of detergents in animal tests was
banned due to the pain inflicted.

Still, EVIC CEBA's popularity continues to grow. Its partners
include Guerlain, Lancaster, Haribo, Alpha Mouss,
and others.

French Large laboratories including Rhône Poulenc and HMR
Guerbet also give it their exclusive business.

Among the tests conducted by EVIC CEBA are the Draize test,
the LD 50, the skin irritancy test, UV lamp tests, and pyrogen
tests.

Every test has a viable alternative that is quite often ignored
by the labs, even though some of these alternatives have been
validated under European law.

The Draize test, in which a product or detergent is injected into
a rabbit's eye in order to determine its safety and long-term
tolerance, is particularly painful and cruel. Today, it is forbidden
by law virtually throughout Europe, where an alternative method
has been validated.

The pyrogen test, in which chemical substances are administered
intravenously, has been replaced by an alternative method known
as the LAL test.

But EVIC CEBA continues to conduct these cruel tests
erratically and in silence.

At EVIC CEBA all he tests are distorted !

Not only are its practices cruel to animals; they are also
a threat to public health.

If an experiment is to yield a positive result on a product
being tested, the animal used must be free of all illness and
tested only once for a single product.

However, at EVIC CEBA animals are reused in multiple
experiments (safety test, Draize test, pyrogen test, etc.).

It was even noted that one rabbit was experimented on for a year
and a half.

This same rabbit was apparently used three times for the
safety test, once for the Draize test, and forty times for the
pyrogen test.

In practice, animals are tested four times over a one-month
period, first on the left side, then on the hind leg, then on
the front leg, and finally on the right side. This amounts to
one test a week for four different products.

At EVIC CEBA, anything goes!

Especially with regard to pyrogen tests.

Syringes and needles are reused for different products on
different rabbits.

The products are not fully injected into the vein because of
the deteriorating condition of the animals as they are used
repeatedly.

Note also that some tests were apparently conducted on
sick animals with nasal discharge or broken legs due to
mistreatment

At EVIC CEBA, animals are carelessly mistreated every day.

At EVIC CEBA, all animals are fit for use.

Those with broken legs from the restraining boxes are used
for weeks.

Those that are left without care and develop suppurant otitis
with motor disorders including loss of balance are used for
safety tests and euthanized only some fifteen days later.

And those that at EVIC CEBA are the main tools of animal
experimentation serve also as footballs to be kicked around
by lab workers.

Dogs struck on the head with a power sprayer.

For lab workers, euthanasia consists of breaking an animal's
neck or, in the case of rodents, striking animals with a label
holder to break the collarbone, a practice known in professional
jargon as "debraining."

For the pyrogen test, injections are repeatedly administered to
the same ear until the needle goes through. The bleeding animal
is left as is, without the vein being clamped.

All sites of animal experimentation are governed by legislation on
detention conditions.

We note that at EVIC CEBA, the cages are too narrow relative
to the animals' weight and size

The bars are not suited for rabbits. Furthermore, they are rusty
and painful for the animals.

The purpose of this message is to warn all companies that work
with EVIC CEBA to halt their orders, lest they be found guilty of
marketing products that are a threat to human health and supporting
animal tests in unacceptable conditions.
