[ below: Who is JaSPER for ? - Main features - Typical usage ]
In this particular namespace, JaSPER stands for:
JUST a SIMPLE PSION EXPENSE RECORDER.
Current version is 1.2, released September 18th, 2000. See what's new.
Note : the initial archive was packaged with the old 1.1 help file. If you downloaded it before September 19, 10:00 GMT you should get the new one and reinstall it. Sorry !

What JaSPER is NOT :
|
| |
|
JaSPER is NOT a replacement for full-featured banking applications, be they commercial like Money, shareware like RMRBank and DPBank, or freeware like ABP.
If you are looking for alternatives to these, JaSPER is probably not what you're after, as it caters to a different, and more specialized, need…

|
Who is JaSPER for, then ?
|
| |
|
Me, for one :-)
JaSPER may also be of interest to you if :
- you manage your bank account(s) on your PC with software such as MS.Money or Quicken, and do not wish to change that ;
- you like to record your daily expenses on your Series5 and export them to your PC for easy account balancing and bank report verification.
This is what I used to do with ABP on my Psion and MS.Money on the PC. Over time I found that ABP was too full-featured and bulky for my needs, and this led to
JaSPER.

Main features

|
The philosophy behind JaSPER is to do only a few things, but to do them quickly and simply :
- JaSPER is designed for fast and easy data-entry of expenses (or incomes, if need be :-). It has three ready-made templates that show only relevant fields for ATM or cash withdrawal, checks, and credit card (or other "virtual" money spending).
- It also lets you turn any record into a persistent "template" of your own, that you can use to quicky enter similar expenses afterwards. If you won't be needing a template you can just duplicate a previous entry.
- All these daily operations (including 'Save & Exit') are "one-key" commands, with on-screen instructions. Less-frequent or sensitive commands (like exporting or mass-deletion) use the familiar "control-key" system. Only seldom-used functions (like customization) require the dreaded "control-shift-key" combination, or the menus.
- JaSPER remembers the last check number you have used for each account, and automatically offers the next one when you enter another check. It also has a separate 'Note' (comment) field to document expenses.
- JaSPER is lean and reasonably fast thanks to Damien Lewis' ListBox control. As it is not meant for huge files, it does not use the EPOC data engine at all ; instead it relies on flat (text) files for storing account (.JSP) and initialization (.INI) information.
- JaSPER optionally keeps backup files and has a limited 'Undo' facility (recover last deleted entry in current account). It is somewhat customizable.

Typical usage
|
| |
This is what I had in mind while developing JaSPER :
- create one or more bank accounts in JaSPER, matching those managed on the PC ;
- use JaSPER to record daily expenses in these, ideally in 'real time' so as not to get behind (this was ever my main problem :-), adding templates along the way to speed things up ;
- when the bank report comes in (or every second, or third…), have JaSPER export the period's worth of records to a QIF file, beam that to the PC, import into MS.Money ;
- check, balance, categorize and chart to your heart's content in the comfort of armchair, big colour screen, and mouse :-)
- once in a while, delete the exported entries from the JaSPER accounts (keeping the templates) for ease of use. Of course, the recurring expenses and incomes (rent,
loan, salary…) are still handled on the PC.
Obviously, this is only my personal practice ; if you put JaSPER to use in different ways, you will probably discover problems I have never met, or missing features I
have never needed (or thought of). If you let me know, I will try to help you out, within reason.
