Why 'jasper'
|
| |
Merriam-Webster (www.m-r.com) says :
jas•per
Pronunciation: 'jas-p&r
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English jaspre, from Middle French, from Latin jaspis, from Greek iaspis, of Semitic origin; akin to Hebrew yAshepheh jasper
Date: 14th century
- an opaque cryptocrystalline quartz of any of several colors; especially : green chalcedony
- a blackish green
Another definition is : "greenish semiprecious stone"… I thought this fitted the Series5 (and its screen) rather well (that was before the 5mx :-)

Limitations/Known bugs
|
| |
Known bugs and limitations have three possible origins : those inherited from the third-party components I used in JaSPER (RMREvent for the core application, DLControls for the ListBox management, see Credits), and of course those introduced by my own laziness and incompetence (hereafter described as "features by design" :-) :
- only one account (listbox) at a time in a JaSPER instance (dlControls). It is however possible to have several instances of JaSPER active with several different accounts opened.
- minimal pen support (Listbox scrolling/selection), no horizontal scrolling, single-column (dlControls). I do not consider the 32766-record limit a limitation, as it should be enough for anyone's monthly expenses :-)
- the "Control-H" combo cannot be distinguished from the "Del" key (RMREvent). This may cause some confusion with the "Help" command (Shift-Control-H), and is the main reason for the "Undelete last" command :-)
- in the "Open existing account" command, the file dialog is supposed to restrict a users' choice to JaSPER files (by UID and extension). This does not seem to work until the default directory has been changed (me?)
- there is no Toolbar by design, as conserving display width is important here. There is, however, a system clock :-)
- even if empty, a JaSPER account always has at least one entry at the top, in bold, that shows the complete file name used for storage. This entry cannot be deleted or edited.
- JaSPER has been developed, and is used, on a French Series5, in conjunction with a French version of MS.Money95. I do not have English versions of the Psion, or MS.Money, or Quicken, to test it with. I have tried to design it in an environment-neutral way, but I will only know for sure if and when I receive user feedback on this.
- JaSPER works on the Series5 and 5mx, but has not been tested (by me) on the Revo -- feedback is welcome.
- IMPORTANT WARNING : be careful if you routinely switch between the point and the comma as the decimal separator. JaSPER will let you create valid new entries whatever the current setting is, and these will be correctly exported to QIF even if mixed in the same account. However, amounts being stored as strings (not numbers), if you edit an entry that was created with one setting while using the opposite setting, you will lose the decimal part of that entry's amount - without warning !...
- there was a bug in versions 1.0-1.01 where, if you did not enter a complete check transaction (with check number) on the first use of JaSPER, check entries would not work for that account afterwards. This has been fixed, thanks to Bertrand Soulier for bringing this to my attention !

Tips & tricks
|
| |
- saving is not done on a record-by-record basis like in the EPOC Data engine, but on entire account files on exit. If you leave JaSPER accounts open for lengthy periods (or all the time), it is a good idea to explicitely use the "Save" command after data entry.
- if you have an account with customized column sizes, and want to create a new one with same layout, load the "model" account first then create the new one. If you want to duplicate both the layout and a list of templates, the easiest way is to copy the .JSP file of the model to a new file and rename the copy to the new account name.

Year-2000 Status

JaSPER itself is Y2K-compliant. It will faithfully record expenses until 2100, which should be enough for most of us.
The QIF files exported by JaSPER use a two-digit year format, so the end result depends on the Y2K-compliance of the PC software that imports them. I have verified that MS.Money 95 correctly processes these files, and I assume other recent packages also will, although I cannot guarantee it.
