Downtown :The Software Refinery did a great job, decades ago. They created most of the software used by the mining companies and the administration of Misplaced Optimism. Nowadays, they still provide some maintenance for their former customers. But these are a bit cheap now… They don't really wish to spend much money for these crappie computers. After all, they can neither be eaten nor used as weapons ! Yep man, there is no money to be done in computing, except for selling some shit software to dumb pilots, who are too eager to get killed as soon as possible.No money to be done, really ? Well, of course except for some hacking and piracy. But no one on Titan would dare to do something illegal like that ? Specially if you are working in software shack 2, that you are in big need of money, are selling shit software to dumb pilots, and are living surrounded by tons of computer only waiting to do something a bit more exiting … No, no one would. Am I right, or is something I could have missed...
The Hardwar Hacking Society : In some building in downtown, there is a heap of screens flickering, some computers working like hell and a group of half naked people having some fun eating pizzas and drinking booze. Well, half naked ... there is nothing exiting about that. Its just because it is damn hot here, and that sweat on keyboard is a bit annoying. Right, maybe wasn't it such a good idea to get installed in the building's heating vent ? But at least, it is big enough. There is no nosy cops here, nor faction spies. Okay, maybe some children could come, but at least these are still funny and not yet too dumb. There might also be the aeration plant controllers. But I don't know why, they don't even seem to care. So long the air quality is good, it is not their problems they say. Weird people I mean.
This group ? Yep, some programmers of course, some pilots, who after all are not so dumb, because they are fed up with their job and are looking for a better way to make their living, sometime some companies boss, or even some former Software Refinery programmers fed up with there official line as protecting their code for shit money…
Basically, they are just trying to know as much as possible of the code used on Titan, in order to get more control on their world. Because greed as no limits.
