Describing devices
This document is aimed at teaching how to describe instruments, appliances, machines and other devices.
It is composed of four parts:
Task 1:
For this exercise, the students will need both the 'Texts'
and the 'Data Bank'
The texts have been divided into several parts ( from a few words to
several paragraphs and numbered in red figures) corresponding to the
items listed and numbered (also in red) in the Databank. Have the students
read the text - if necessary elicit the vocabulary - and complete
the Databank by filling in the blanks with
the words / phrases / sentences from the text that may be used
to express the given idea(s).
Task 2 :
Use the Students' Worksheet.
Exercises 1 and 2 are simple and do not necessarily
require the students using the now completed 'Data Bank'
Exercise 2 is best done orally. Weaker classes / students can rely
on the 'Presentation' box only, while more advanced classes / students
will be encouraged to draw from the databank.
Exercises 3 and 4 involve describing more complex devices and could be done in writing so as to enable the students to refer to the information contained in the databank
Exercise 5 is much more difficult and requires
an Internet connection to http://www.howstuffworks.com/
Since downloading from this site is fairly slow ( due to the advertising
banners) it could be a good idea to work from the How Stuff Works CD-ROM.
Students will be invited to present 'their' product / device
orally.
