# 31    Labelling Many technical texts are accompanied by drawings, plans and diagrams  whose purpose is to illustrate and explain the meaning of some parts of the text.

On the contrary, with  labelling, . the focus moves  from text to diagram  and it can be used to develop written comprehension.
.
(As you will see, my diagrams are hand-made and not very good quality! I do apologize, but have been unable to do better.. If some colleague decides to use this  worksheet and feels it useful or necessary  to  draw his own better diagrams,  I would be grateful to him or her if I was sent the new ones .  Many thanks.)

'Motion Master' Ride Management System

1 Comfort plays a critical role in the trucking industry, helping maintain driver concentration over long periods of road time. A new seat suspension -one that combines a motion sensor, electronic controller, and a patented magnetic fluid damper-contributes to a more comfortable ride.

2 As road vibrations enter the vehicle cabin , the motion sensor built into the driver's seat monitors seat movement. Thus the controller electronically updates information on seat position as much as 500 times/sec to determine the force necessary to control seat motion.

3 The damping system uses the inherent properties of magneto-rheological (MR) fluids - suspensions of micron-sized, magnetizable particles in an oil. Normally, MR fluids are free-flowing, like motor oil. When subjected to a magnetic field, however, the randomly dispersed particles form chains that restrict flow, effectively changing viscosity so that they can become almost solid.

4 The controler delivers the magnetic force required to control seat movement so that the system can vary softness or firmness to match changing levels of shocks and vibrations.

The SC series of SERVO COMPATIBLE direct thrust ( = propulsion) drives from Linear Drives Ltd provides a simple, cost-effective solution to most automation requirements. Proven (= proved) throughout industry, an SC drive is used in place of traditional servo motors and transfer mechanisms, providing thrust directly to the load to be moved

The drives work as follows : the stator of the motor (known as the "thrust rod", comprises a tube housing a special sequence of magnetic components. The thrust rod can be envisaged as a means of creating a series of permanent radial magnetic fields along the whole length of travel (see figure 2). The current carrying conductor necessary to impart thrust is a cylindrical coil through which the thrust rod passes. This coil is housed inside a cylindrical sleeve. Linear thrust can be obtained anywhere along the thrust rod. A linear incremental encoder, placed along the length of travel of the thrust block, is used to obtain information on its position, velocity and direction.

Compression Refrigeration Cycle

A simple vapour-compression cycle is shown in Figure 3.

The refrigerant enters the compressor as a slightly superheated vapour at low pressure. Then it passes to the condenser as a vapour at high pressure. There, as a result of increased pressure and loss of heat ( heat transfer to the exterior surrounding) the refrigerant condenses and leaves the condenser as a high-pressure liquid which passes through an expansion valve to decrease pressure. The liquid, now at low pressure, is vaporized in the evaporator, usually a coiled pipe in the freezer compartment, thus leading to a drop in temperature in this compartment. Finally the refrigerant is drawn away by the compressor and the whole cycle begins again.
