1. – WORDS and PHRASES
 

1.1. – BASIC VOCABULARY
 
 
1.1.1. - If something is mandatory :
Always wear / wear hardtoe shoes
You must wear hardtoe shoes - Hardtoe shoes must be worn
You / operators are required to wear hardtoe shoes
It is mandatory / required to wear hardtoe shoes
It is mandatory / required for workers to wear hardtoe shoes (when they work with heavy loads)

1.1.2. - If something is (not) recommended : 
You should not wear loose clothes
Loose clothes should not be worn when working near machinery

1.2. - MORE COMPLEX WORDS and PHRASES
 
 
121. If it is mandatory / prohibited. You can also say: 
  • Be sure to ventilate the room – make sure you ventilate the room
  • Be sure that the room  is ventilated – ensure that the room is ventilated
  • If problems / damage happen(s) / occur(s), be sure to ... / you should ... / you must ...
  • If machinery isn't guarded, it shouldn't be started
122 If you want to explain why something is mandatory / prohibited / recommended, you can say:
  • You / this may cause damage
  • Failure to ventilate the room / to comply with the regulations, may result in / produce / cause damage   (Note: ‘damage’ is an uncount noun = always singular )
  • ( Not) ventilating the room / complying with the regulations may result in / produce / cause damage
123. If something must be done before something else : 
  • Be sure to disconnect the unit before working on the circuit
  • Do not touch a wire before you have switched the current off
  • Never work on a circuit until you have checked that the wire is not live










 

124. Other words and phrases
 
  • to beware of = pay attention to, be careful of - e.g. Beware of blades. (a blade: a thin piece of metal with a sharp edge; it is for cutting) photo lames 
  • to prevent somebody/ something from doing - e.g. Wearing resistant gloves may prevent you from receiving hand injuries
  • to occur = to happen
  • regulations = an order , a rule made the management to inform you of what you must (not) do
  • to comply with regulations = to conform, to do what you are required
  • hazard = a situation that can be dangerous to you, your health or safety 
  • to expose to hazards - e.g. Not complying with safety regulations will expose you to hazards and lead to accidents
  • Unless otherwise stated / directed / told, you must / should ... = except if you are given different instructions, you must / should...










2 – GRAMMAR BANK

You are likely to need the following patterns. Make sure you can use them correctly

2.1 PASSIVE
 
You should switch power off before...
>> Power should be switched off before ...

Don’t leave foods between 41°F and 141°F for more than four hours
>> Foods should not / must not be left between 41°F and 141°F for more than four hours

You must keep the premises locked
>> The premises must be kept locked 

2.2. CAUSE

Special masks must be worn because of the high toxicity of the vapours
Special masks must be worn since / because the vapours are highly toxic


2.3. CONSEQUENCE
 
Take care of your equipment so it won’t let you down 
Take care of your equipment as a result it won’t let you down


Other ways to express consequence:

Contact with water may result in / lead to electric shocks

2.4. PURPOSE

Be sure to disconnect the unit to prevent / in order to prevent fatal electric shocks

Ensure welding safety by using proper eye and face protectors
3. SUMMARY OF LANGUAGE

3.1. Modal verbs

MUST is used to express something mandatory
SHOULD : you mean that something is recommended
MAY, to describe an eventual occurrence


3.2. It is + adjective

It is mandatory / prohibited / recommended to (do)
It is mandatory / prohibited / recommended for operators / machines / him / them to (do)
