INTRODUCTION
Please note :
1/ These exercises have been devised for French students, which means
they sometimes rely on translation from / into French; they also take advantage
of certain similarities between French and English (use of what we call
'transparent' words, i.e. words which look more or less the same in both
languages) or insist on 'faux amis' (false friends) i.e. words which look
alike but have different meanings. It is obvious that such points are useless
for non French speaking students ( except perhaps for Italians or
Spaniards). However the very idea of 'transparent' words also applies
to other languages such as German or Dutch, for instance.
Most of the explanations are written in French, but I have added a
quick translation.
2/ Though these files do not concern technical English as
such , they have been added to the data-bank because the technique used
here can apply to low level students whether they are studying general
English or English for engineering.
