DOWNLOAD & EXTRACT A GAME OR PROGRAM
If you are not familiar with the Internet and with computers, the instructions on how you download and extract a file can be useful to you. It is very simple indeed !

In order to play MSX Games on your PC you must download a certain number of games and programs. Download simply means that you need to transfer a file from one computer to yours.
  1. Click on the name of the game or program you want to download.
  2. A dialog box pops up where you will be able to give a destination to the file. You can also change the name of the file if you wish but do not change the extension (exemple : pong.exe can be changed in pingpong.exe but not pong.tru !). Do not give names longer than 8 letters.
  3. Click on 'OK'
  4. A new dialog box appears... the game is downloading. Wait that the dialog box disappears before you close your Internet connection.
  5. The file is now on your computer !
Now that the file is downloaded on your computer, you need to extract it. All games present on this site have been compressed in ZIP format (Compressing a file reduces its size, thus the time you spend to download it). ZIP compression is the most popular. You will imperatively need an extractor to extract your files. The most popular ones (WinZip, PKZip) can be found on any magazine CD-ROM or on the Internet (Download.com or Shareware.com or Tucows).
  1. Install any ZIP extractor on your computer (we will use WinZip 6.3 in this example).
  2. Launch WinZip.
  3. Click on 'Open' and select the file you want to extract. Click on 'Open'.
  4. The Dialog box closes. Click now on 'Extract'. Chose the place you want the file to be extracted. Click on 'Extract'.
  5. The file is being extracted where you told to.
  6. You can now read further on how you will need to proceed to play your MSX Games.

COMPILED GAMES (*.EXE)
This is the only kind of MSX game that do not need any emulator. You only need to download and extract the game you want. Once this is done simply double-click on the game to launch it (under Windows95). To Quit the game press on the 'Escape' button while the game is running. This button also permits to save games.

GAMES IN *.ROM FORMAT
To play ROM games again, you need an emulator. This section gives instructions for each emulator present on this website (fMSX, RuMSX, Virtual MSX and BrMSX).

Playing ROM games with fMSX-DOS 1.6 :

Directly from MS-DOS
This method should only be used if you have some knowledge of DOS.
  1. Copy the games you want to play in the same directory as fMSX-DOS and restart your computer in MS-DOS mode.
  2. Locate yourself in your fMSX folder and type the following commands to play the games
  3. fmsx-dos -msx1 game.rom to play a ROM game in MSX1 mode
  4. fmsx-dos -msx2 -diska game.dsk to play a DSK game in MSX2 mode
  5. fmsx-dos -msx2 -diska A:game.dsk to play from a real MSX Disk.

Using fMSX Launchpad :
If you do not like MS-DOS at all, then this is the solution ! Read the 'Launchpads' section to learn how to install fMSX Launchpad on your computer.
  1. Launch the application
  2. In the 'fMSX-DOS Application' field, localise 'fmsx-dos.exe'
  3. In the 'Cartridge Slot A' field, select the game you want to play finishing with the *.rom extension
  4. In the left column, enter the specificities of the game ... the format will always be Konami 8kb Rom unless specified in the 'ROM Games' section of this website.
  5. Click on 'Run' and the game will automatically start.
  6. To stop the game, press F10 on your keyboard. F9 permits to pause the game and F8 allows you to take a picture of your screen (*.bmp)

Using fMSX Shell :
These are instructions for another good launchpad. Read the 'Launchpads' section to learn how to install fMSX Shell on your computer.
  1. Launch the application
  2. Select 'Basic'
  3. As for fMSX Launchpad you need to localise 'fmsx-dos.exe'. Select then the *.rom game of your choice and click on 'Run fMSX' to start the game. F10 quits the games, F9 pauses it and F8 allows you to make a picture of the screen (*.bmp).
  4. If a configuration works for a game, you can save it (very nice feature) by clicking on 'Save Settings'. Give a name and you should find your saved configuration under 'fMSX Shell'.
  5. In 'Display/Sound' you can specify sound and video options.

Frequent problems when using fMSX-DOS :
If you have difficulties to launch some games, these few tips may help you out !
  1. The *.rom file does not load. On the first black screen you see the words 'Cartridge A ... Loading ... Failed' : your file has a major problem. Reload it and try again !
  2. Your file seems to load but after the MSX start screen, a blue screen appears with line commands : your configuration of the game is not correct (for example, a MSX2 game will not work if the configuration is set on 'MSX1'). Quit the game and try a new configuration. You may need to 'play' a bit with several configurations before finding the good one !
  3. fMSX does not localise the game : Be always sure that all folders relative to fmsx or that contain it have less than 8 characters! A game placed in a folder called 'fabulous msx games' will not work under fmsx-dos because it will be transformed in 'fabulo~1' by the emulator.

Playing ROM Games with RuMSX
RuMSX is almost a straight-forward to use emulator. It is the only one which has been specifically developed for Windows95. Here are the basic instructions to use it with ROM games.
  1. Launch RuMSX and once it has started select 'Configuration' in the 'File Menu'
  2. Depending on the game you want to play select the type of MSX you want to use. Press OK and when the prompt asks you if you want to reboot your MSX click 'Yes'.
  3. Now select 'Change Media' in the 'Emulator' menu. A window pops-up.
  4. Click on the 'Slot1' tab followed by a click on 'Change'. Select the *.rom file you want to play and press 'OK'. RuMSX normally detects the good 'Type' of cartridge for the game, however it will not work all the times. In this case, select the appropriate type manually from the proposed list.
  5. Click on 'OK' when you are ready to play and choose 'Soft-reboot'. The game should start!

Playing ROM Games with Virtual MSX
Virtual MSX is another easy-to-use emulator but is restricted to MSX1 Games. No sound is supported and the program is from time to time unstable.
  1. Launch Virtual MSX and select 'Cartridges' in the 'Setup' Menu.
  2. Click on 'Browse' next to 'Cartridge A File' and select the *.rom file you want to play (MSX1 Only). Click on 'OK' twice.
  3. Now select 'Start' in the 'Run' Menu (or press F12). The MSX Game you selected should start.

Playing ROM Games with BrMSX
This emulator has been written for MS-DOS. It is the fastest on the market but has some limitations (MSX1 only).
  1. Copy the *.rom game you want to play in the same folder as BrMSX.
  2. Launch BrMSX, wait a few seconds and click the left button of your mouse. A contextual menu should appear.
  3. Click on 'Load ROM' and select the game you want to play. BrMSX starts the game automatically!

GAMES IN *.DSK FORMAT
You can easily play *dsk from almost all MSX emulators. As you have certainly tried to run *.rom games before, I assume you know how to launch each emulator and I am almost sure you almost already know how to do it. However, here are some very brief instructions for each emulator.

fMSX-DOS : Either fMSX Launchpad or fMSX Shell have a section called 'DiskA' or/and 'DiskB'. Just select the *.dsk file you want to play and run fMSX.

RuMSX : Head for 'Change Media' and select the file in the 'DiskA' tab. Have 'Image file selected' if the game is on your hard-disk or have 'Disk Drive' selected if you intend to play the game from a real MSX diskette (which needs to be in Drive A of your PC).

Virtual MSX : Select 'Disk Setup' from the 'Setup' Menu. Choose 'Disk File' and locate the *.dsk game you want to play. If you want to play from a real MSX floppy disk, choose 'DriveA'.

BrMSX : In MS-DOS type the command c:/brmsx155/brmsx -diska game.dsk

GAMES IN *.BIN - *.BAS - *.LDR FORMATS
Things are a little bit more complicated if you want to play *.bin, *.bas or even *.ldr games. If you are trying to play these games for the first time, follow then carefully the following instructions.

Software Requirements :

The instructions given below are specifically written to be used with fMSX-Dos 1.6 and fMSX Shell 1.3. This does not mean that you won't be able to play these games with other emulators and/or launchpads. If you decide to use another software, you will certainly need to adapt the instructions.

Start fMSX in MSX2 mode
Start fMSX in MSX2 mode and in DISK BASIC (yes, that blue screen!) with command lines instructions (like DOS).
  1. Launch fMSX Shell
  2. Select 'Basic'
  3. Select MSX2 in the 'MSX Type' field
  4. In the 'fMSX path' field localise your fMSX application (*.exe)
  5. Click then on 'Run FMSX' ... the emulator will start ... the MSX logo appears followed by the blue screen on which you will see the following words : Disk Basic version 1.0
Format a MSX floppy disk
You are now in MSX Disk Basic. You will need a Double Density floppy disk (720Kb). If you don't have one, you can always cover the upper left hole of a High Density Disk (1,4 Mb) with tape.

To format the disk, proceed as follows :
  1. Type 'Call Format' and press ENTER
  2. Choose 'Drive A'
  3. Choose 'Double Sided Format (720Kb)'
  4. Insert your floppy disk in your A Drive of your PC
  5. Press any key and your floppy disk will start to format !
Copy the games
Copy all the files (do not include the folders) on your just-formatted floppy (use Windows95). Be sure to copy all the files !!! Most games in *.bas, *.bin or *.ldr formats have several files !
example : godzilla.bas & godzilla.001 & godzilla.002 etc...

Create an image of your floppy disk
You will need a little utility called 'Dcopy.exe'. You can find it in the 'Emulators' section of this website. Download it and place it in the same folder as fMSX.

Follow now the instructions below :
  1. Select 'Tools' in fMSX Shell
  2. Localise 'dcopy.exe'
  3. Localise the file 'Msx2dsk.exe' (it should be in your fmsx folder)
  4. Select then 'I want to Copy a MSX Diskette with Dcopy.exe'
  5. Select 'Source A' and 'Destination Image File'
  6. Click on 'Copy' ... a window will show up.
  7. Give a name to your image file (with a *.dsk extension) and place it where you want it to be ! Click on 'Save'.
  8. Dcopy starts ... in DOS mode
  9. Follow the instructions that are given on your screen ... restart if an error message appears (there is a small bug in Disk Copy from time to time ... not harmful)
  10. Your floppy disk is being copied on your hard drive as an image file.
Start your image file
From this point you can either use fMSX Shell or fMSX Launchpad. You are almost there now ! Start the launchpad of your choice, Select the 'MSX2' mode and select your image file (*.dsk format) and click on 'Run'. Your emulator starts, the MSX logo appears followed by the blue screen (Disk Basic version 1.0)

Start the Games (finally!)
Before typing the command that will execute the game, be sure to know the exact name of the file that matches the game ! Here are the commands you will need to type :
      For a *.bas game :
      load"nomdujeu.bas",r followed by ENTER

      For a *.bin game :
      bload'nomdujeu.bin",r followed by ENTER

      For a *.ldr game :
      load"nomdujeu.ldr",r followed by ENTER
To play directly from your Floppy Disk :
- Start fMSX Launchpad
- Click on the button right to 'Disk Drive A'
- Click on 'PC Drive A : MSX Drive A' at the bottom of the window
- Start fMSX in MSX2 mode (without the floppy in the drive !)
- MSX Disk Basic loads (command lines on blue screen)
- Insert your floppy disk in your A Drive of your PC.
- Type the command that matches the game you want to play (see above)

HOW TO COMPILE A ROM GAME INTO AN EXE ONE ?
This question is often asked and unfortunately I am not an expert to answer it. The all I know is that you need a special "SDK" pack, called DAO, which will help to recompile MSX games. The other thing you need is a Borland Assembler and Link and naturally some knowledge of MSX coding to complete analysis of the games (courtesy of Valerye Bostan who recompiled many MSX games).
I have never tried the process but I can remember that I once encountered the software on a MSX site, but I can't remind which one ! However, I think the process is quite hard since if it would not, all MSX games would already been compiled. All compiled games I know are on this site. If you know any other, please let me know.

OTHER INFORMATION ...
I hope that these instructions have helped you out. If you have more interest in the MSX, you can read Manuel Bilderbeek's MSX FAQ on the following website :
