History

As soon as they invented paper, Chinese developed its use.

For a long time, paper-cutting was reserved to high-society women as an aristocratic hobby. Later, as paper becomes more democratic, paper-cuts make their apparition in lower classes of society. Reserved to women and young girls as a domestic art , it becomes an art when some craftsmen, essentially men, practise it.
Anyway, as soon as it left the aristocratic classes, it became a lively and popular folk art.

Pasted on windows during the New Year festivities, representing lucky symbols, it soon became synonymous of presents and feast.

Through centuries, different Chinese regions developed their own style and themes.
