Game rules

1) The aim of the game

You win the game if:

  • you take all the opponent's pieces
  • your opponent cannot play
  • your opponent gives up

The game is a draw when:
  • neither of the players can take all the opponent's pieces (for example 3 kings against 1)
  • both players agree on it

2) Initial settings

The game is played on a 10x10 board, with a dark square at the bottom left and top right corners.
Each player has 20 pieces, placed on the first four rows.
Each player plays alternatively.
White starts to play.

3) Piece moves

Pieces move diagonally one square forward (we only play on dark squares).
A piece that reaches the last row and stops on it, becomes a king. This piece has to be covered by another piece of the same colour.

4) King moves

You can move a king of as many squares as you wish, on one diagonal, backward and forward.
The move of a king is only limited by the other pieces on the board.

5) The capture by a piece

To take an opponent's piece, you need to:

  1. be situated next to the piece to take
  2. jump over the piece to take
  3. remove the opponent's piece

Here, the left white piece can take the adjacent black piece.
On the contrary, the right white piece can not take anything since there is no free square right behind the black piece.

You can also take backward.
Taking is compulsory.

If, once you have taken one piece, you are again in position of taking a piece, you must keep on until it is not possible any more.
Pieces must be removed at the end of the capture, not during it.
Here is a big capture. White must take six pieces.

6) The capture by a king

Since, the king can move a long way on a diagonal, it also has bigger opportunities as far as taking is concerned.
The example should be enough to help you understand how the capture works. The king must take any piece situated on its diagonal (if there is a free square behind) and must change way each time a new capture is possible.
At the end of this capture, the king can stop on any of the crossed squares.
It is forbidden to jump twice over the same piece. On the contrary, you can go through the same square twice.

7) The most taking rule

This is an essential rule, though it is not known by most people.
When you can take in many different ways, you must take as much as you can.
It means that if you can take either two pieces or one king, you have to take two. The quality of the taking piece or of the taken pieces is not of importance. A king is the same as a piece.
In the example, the white piece must take 3 black pieces. Taking the two black kings is not allowed.
