CORNET, Séverin (vers 1530 (Valenciennes) - mars 1582 (Anvers)) Cornet quitta Valenciennes pour s'installer à Anvers, et se maria dans cette ville vers 1559. Il créa un choeur réputé à Saint Rombaud de Malines (Mechelen) et le dirigea de 1564 à 1572. Il fut ensuite maître de choeur à la cathédrale d'Anvers de 1572 à 1581, et perdit son poste lorsque les calvinistes supprimèrent les services. Il envisagea alors d'entrer au service de l'archiduc Ferdinand d'Autriche, mais sans succès. Grâce aux généreux subsides des marchands anversois, il publia en 1581, chez Christofle Plantin, trois importants volumes. A en juger par la préface de ses publications, il fut certainement en relation étroite avec des cercles littéraires influents. Des compositions en l'honneur de la fille de Guillaume d'Orange confirment son soutien à la noblesse catholique. Sa première publication (Anvers, 1563) est consacrée à des canzoni napolitane à quatre voix. Le sonnet qui ouvre son recueil Chansons françoyses de 1581 (5, 6 et 8 voix ; 3 pièces sur des textes de Marot) suggère qu'il passa une partie de sa jeunesse en Italie. 14 des 40 napolitane sont des compositions antérieures arrangées de telle sorte que le superius du modèle devient ténor. Les textures homophones sont remaniées en imitations sur des motifs du timbre initial. Plusieurs modèles figurent dans les Villotte alla napolitana publiées dans les années 1560 par Angelo Gardane. Les Madrigali de 1581 contiennent cinq napolitane à six voix, dont certaines sont des parodies élaborées de ses oeuvres antérieures. Les Cantiones Musicae, sa publication la plus célèbre, connurent deux rééditions. Le style de Cornet est essentiellement polyphonique avec des imitations fréquentes et un développement motivique prononcé. Certaines de ses chansons furent reprises avec des textes modifiés par le musicien-imprimeur Simon Goulart.

He formed a distinguished choir at St Rombaud, Malines, and directed it from 1564 to 1572. He was choirmaster at Antwerp Cathedral from 1572 to 1581 ; he lost this position when the services were supprssed by the Calvinists in 1581 and he sought unsuccessfully to enter the service of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria. He published three major volumes through Plantin's publishing house in that year, help by generous subsidies from Antwerp merchants. He was certainly in close touch with influential and literary circles, as the prefatory material to his publications clearly shows, and compositions in honour of the the daughter of William of Orange confirm his support for the Catholic nobility. Cornet's first publication appeared in 1563 and was devoted to canzoni napolitane for four voices ; the opening sonnet of his Chansons françoyses of 1581 (5, 6 and 8 voices ; 3 of them on Marot 's texts) suggests that he had spent some time in Italy during his youth. 14 of the 40 napolitane are arrangements of pre-existing compositions in which the superius becomes the new tenor ; homophonic textures are reworked in points of imitations based of motifs from the tune. Most of the models can be traced in Angelo Gardane's Villotte alla napolitana published during the 1560s. Cornet's Madrigali of 1581 contains five napolitane for six voices, some of which are elaborate parodies of his earlier works. The Cantiones musicae was his most successful publication and went through two reprints. His style is predominantly polyphonic with pervading imitation and plentiful motivic development. Simon Goulart edited some of Cornet's works with new texts.
