These photographs
were taken between September 12, 1997 and December 29, 1997. All shots
were taken by my love, except for the first (anonymous) and the last (myself). We spent
4 months in India researching related reports about Indian economic and human development. Here are some of our
souvenirs from over there:
We agreed two days of holidays during this stay. The first one, we went to Orchha (picture n°7) and the second one, we visited Agra and the famous Taj Mahal. By way of culture, Taj Mahal is a tomb that the moghul emperor Shah Jahan built for the memory of his wife... it's the greatest symbol of love on earth !
We worked at the Delhi School of Economics, with Jean Drèze. Then, most of these pictures were taken in Delhi (and New Delhi). Here, it is Humayun's tomb, which was built at the same time that the Taj Mahal. Isn't it likely ?
All these monuments are quite beautiful
(and clean), but what does life in India look like ? It's like this...
streets over-crowded, pollution, Maruti's (cars), Bajaj's (scooters) and...
colorful !
In our street, there were many merchants similar to this one, carrying their goods on a tricycle (a rickshaw), a wheelbarrow or on their cranium. Look carefully ! Here, the women are buying, and the child is selling, and not the reverse !
To go around the town, we used to take the buses or, sometimes, the cabs (black and yellow ones), or the motor-rickshaws (really noisy) and bicycle-rickshaws. This driver makes its nap because, often, they don't have any other place to sleep...
To further research Marie-Eve study on women education, we went to Himachal Pradesh where we conducted household surveys. Himachal Pradesh is located at the foot of the Himalayas. One morning, while leaving for an investigation, we attended sunrise.
Orchha is a town nobody knows anything of it. But we found there plenty of temples and really nice buildings (if they were not blackened by pollution). We slept in an hotel which was within a temple !
Oooh ! it's already time to leave India. A last splendid picture of the mountains from the plane...
