Monarchy safe in Canada for now: Chretien
OTTAWA (CP) - Prime Minister Jean Chretien says he
already has enough on his plate and doesn't need the added weight of monarchists rankled
by the comments of a federal cabinet minister who favors abolishing the monarchy.
...Tory Leader Jean Charest joined the chorus.
"I find the timing of the remark not very good ... especially with the events
of the last few weeks.
I don't think it's the best moment to raise this issue."
Chretien said he would need the consent of the of all the provinces and the House of
Commons to abolish the monarchy in Canada.
And when would this best moment
be, Mister Charest?
