Saint Lucia's culture is very rich,
and has two emblematic figures: Derek Walcott, Nobel
Prize of Literature 1992 and Sir W Arthur Lewis, Nobel
Prize of economy 1979. The local artists, less known, are
very interesting too.
As everywhere in the Caribbean, the music is very important. Of course, the main influence on local music is the jamaïcan reggae, with very popular singers like Amate. But the jazz is also very present, in particular with the great festival organized each year in May at Pigeon Point, one of the most important jazz festivals in the world. Santana, Herbie Hancock, or George Benson have been among the performers.
The local handicrafts are very interesting. Many local craftmen offer various products of their manufacture carved in coconuts or wood. If many stores sell imported products of other islands like Trinidad, some are specialized in the local handicrafts like The Bagshaws or The Caribelle Batik Factory close from Morne Fortune.
The creole patois is still very used. The authorities became aware of this inheritance and try to develop it, with events like the Jouney Kweole (creole day) in October. Lastly, among the events of the saint lucian life, the carnival in February has a particular importance.
