Glory brings their story to life with breathtaking scope, brilliant acting and a powerful score. Matthew Broderick plays a young white officer chosen to lead the regiment into battle and Denzel Washington turns in an Oscar-winning performance as the understandably distrustful young private who first balks at the white officer's authority, until the two reach an understanding that changes them both forever. The final tragically heroic battle-scene alone makes the movie worthwhile, but taken as a whole it's easily one of the best war movies ever made. Notes Black soldiers, in fact, had a difficult time enlisting in the Northern army, which at first did not welcome them; when the Unionists finally changed their mind, African-Americans often responded to the earlier slight by refusing to join up. Of the 186,107 black soldiers in the Union army, 37,300 died; many of them were front-line men in the most dangerous positions. 75 years later, during World War II, many blacks still fought in segregated regiments. The film follows the youthful Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, responsible for readying these soldiers for battle; he finds the job harder than he expected, because many of the man balk at taking orders from him. One Private Trip is especially resistant to Shaw's leadership, but over time the two come to an understanding... and it is this Private who volunteers to carry his regiment's colors into battle -- a front-line position that means almost certain death.
