Welcome to all the greedy folks of planet earth !

Emilienne Do you like stories? Probably Yes ! So, you won't mind if I tell you about a short story that gave birth to this incredible web page...

This summer, I had the pleasure of receiving a visit from some of my nephews from the United States. To celebrate this reunion, we have organized one of these monstrous family dinners, in the pure tradition of Bearn, a province of south-west France. Of course, most of the discussions were focused on the way of living in the United States and more particularly on the latest technological madness that makes a complete revolution throughout the country: I am talking about the Web ! In this part of France where I live, people still take the time to count hours at the sound of church bells, so talking about the web is like communicating with UFOs ! That didn't prevent them from being delighted by some exquisite dishes of our local cuisine. They reserved a special feast to the Merveilles, that I can only literally translate into Wonders, after their flattering comments. "As far as the Internet, it looks like here we are in Zoombieland, but you have divine food and a hell of Merveilles !" they declared with a hint of irony.

One small thing they didn't know, is that even in the remotest part of Bearn, Plug-ins from Netscape and Active X components from Microsoft or Java software from Sun are no secret for anybody. Therefore, once my nephews left to fly back to Seattle, I turned on my 200 MHz Pentium I was preciously hiding in my attic and I designed this web page in no time. I, just as you know, what we don't have to do these days to gain respect from the young generation... I must confess I belong to the Senior-Cyber-Wired club directed by Grandpa Simon who didn't hesitate to host my page on Mygale, this outstanding French web site.
Now folks, you know under which conditions I came to publish this secret recipe that already puts water in your mouth. Don't deny it, because I know it's so. Now you know what to do. So stop harassing your keyboard and rush to the kitchen. This is what you have to do !

Preparation and frying, 25 minutes

Recipe for 6 persons. For greedy people, double the proportions !

1 pound flour (500g)
2 ounces butter (50g)
3 ounces sugar (75g)
3 eggs
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 tablespoon vanilla powder
2 tablespoons rhum or 1 peeled skin of a lemon
1 pinch of salt

Enfin des Merveilles !
Encore des merveilles

Frying

Add sugar, eggs and a pinch of salt in a large bowl. Mix well all these ingredients with a wooden spoon. Add the butter slightly melted and the peeled skin of a lemon or rhum. Mix well all together. Add progressively flour and baking powder. Finish incorporating flour and baking powder by hand. Put the dough at rest (my friend Joanna thinks you are going to love this one, so I have decided to leave it. The others, may read "Leave dough uncovered") for at least two hours.

Stretch the dough with a roller and cut it in rectangles of 1-½ x 4 inches with a sharp knife. Twist each small rectangle and immerse them in hot but not smoking oil. Remove them from frying oil once they are big and have a yellow-brown color. Drain the oil from them and sift with powder sugar. Serve warm.

Although my Merveilles have the property to make the bottles of Coke dancing, I would rather having you dancing...; Therefore, I strongly recommend a bottle of Jurançon, a fine wine whose virtues take roots in the ancient time, since it was reported that a few drops of this nectar were poured into the mouth of future king Henri IV th, during the celebration of his baptism. Coca-Cola dancing !

If you have any questions or comments regarding my recipe, send me mail ! I will reply to it.
