EUROPEAN
DEMOCRAT STUDENTS
Join the EDS, "one of the
Europe's most influential student organisations"
(The Times)
With 29 member organisations from Europe such as the Union Nationale
Inter-universitaire (UNI) in France and associated members from other parts of the world,
EDS is clearly the strongest European political student organisation. Founded in 1961, EDS
has initiated and co-ordinated a number of campaigns throughout Europe. From the
"European Youth for Democracy" in Portugal to the "Fight for human
rights" during which thousands of signatures were collected to support political
prisoners from Chile and the Soviet Union. In 1979, EDS played, under the theme
"Europe for the individual", a major part in the campaign for the first European
elections and urged support for the non-socialist parties. Among other campaigns
throughout the EDS history, the "Democratic Solidarity", the "Democracy
under threat", and the "Open borders" have to be mentioned. Recently, EDS
supported the struggle for democracy in Yugoslavia.

The aims of EDS are
- to work for a free and united Europe and bridge the gap
between East and West
- to promote contacts and co-operation between Christian
Democratic, Conservative, Liberal students and national students unions from different
countries
- to seek common action and political campaigning upon
various political issues
- to create by all possible means a better understanding of
each others cultural and political situation (conferences, publications, summer
universities...)
- to exchange information on educational policy and other
political patterns
